Spiegazione

Il passato di “to be”

To be è un verbo irregolare anche al passato: was per la 1ª e 3ª persona singolare, were per tutte le altre. Non usa mai l’ausiliare did.
Negativa: was not / wasn’t, were not / weren’t. ❓ Domanda: Was / Were + soggetto…? Con le wh- words: Where were you?, Why was he late?, How was the film?.

Usi

Dove eravamo: We were at the beach. 😊 Come stavamo: I was tired. 👤 Chi/cosa era: My grandfather was a teacher. 🎂 Età e nascita: I was born in 2013 (attenzione: in inglese “sono nato” si dice I was born).

There was / there were

Per descrivere luoghi del passato: There was a castle on the hill, There weren’t any shops. Domanda: Was there a TV? – Yes, there was.
